Following up my americanus post by surveying the same area today in the heat- 89deg.

So... do you think the female survived?

Nearby, this garter was soaking up some water and some sun... biding his time.

The habitat is right for spotted turtles

    And what do ya know?

And juvy a painted turtle basking with a gihugic northern redbelly... but the redbelly was more wary.

I will be returning once again later this week to prove more species here... stay tuned.

Just discovered a love for spotted turtles after I found my first last summer. There so cool. Took mom out on easter to hopefully see one at a new site we just found but we struck out. We did end up finding 1 box fresh out of the ground, two snappers and 26 painteds. Was a good day but i wont get to take her out for about a month, she on a work trip with my dad. I also have to get her out to see some TR. After she seen my live birth TR pics from last year, she got a whole different outlook about herps.

A great find Kyle. I still keep a close watch hoping some of the historic spots in SW PA will produce one. I always liked seeing them when I lived in SC. Always in low flood zones in spring and every rainy morning I was either moving a Box or a Spotted off the road.

You either have a good zoom lens or your steath skills are phenomenal... probably both :-). I have enjoyed your posts so far this year. -E
