I was out at a swamp near my house today running my beagles, and I came across my first herp for the year. I was a giant spotted sally. Boy, was i stoked! I was lookin at the 10 day weather and it looks like next friday and saturday is going to rain. Looks like some good nights to look for sallies around vernal pools/ Am i right with that statement? I'm going out to listen for wood frogs now. I dont know if its the right time or not but now i ready.

Nice with the spotted. Might be some small migrations starting with the warmth.

Question for you, will i find the dusky sallies in the stream now, like i found them in the fall in the streams. Is it worth going to a stream to look for them or are they in the mud somehwere.

Nice find on the spotted. What was the temp out by your way?
I've found a few duskies in January and February in some "new spots" that I have checked out so my best guess would be that if you say them in the fall good chance to find them again now.

I got chills just thinking of it! After our findings last fall the wife and daughters are all about the amphibians now. When the rain starts we're going lookin. A great man I met thru Phil Dunning is coming up Saturday to check some places out with us. I'm stoked! By the way is Phil still kicking?

He should be just spoke with him the other week.

Went out to listen for frogs last night. Ideal temps, but things are still covered in the woods around here. We need some rain an warmer nights.

    Good luck everyone.

Good to hear your healing up Phil !
I started a diet, so i can get in better shape to run the ridges this summer. I plan on living in the mtns. this summer. Went out this morning to run my beagles, and almost piled up my truck, for a adult newt. I'm stoked for tonight and tommorrow night. We got the lights ready and plan on patrolling the road out from the house where we were seeing the sallies in the fall. Just talked to Rich and he said that is should be a good night for everything. Tommorrow im going to some pools to see if i can find any marlbed larva. This is a very uplifting time of year. The critters are starting to wake!

Nothing calling yet Jason....the spotted and the 2 peepers last night were the first migrators on a road we suspected to be good for it...
