MemberLast rattler I saw was October 11th at a den in Clinton County...two were still out at the den crevice. The last herps I saw in general were while doing habitat assessments for proposed gas wells in Tioga county the week of November 15th.. Saw one garter, one red back, and about 8 red efts.

ModeratorHavent gotten out in a bit, missed the last warm rain. But, I do get out in winter and will be looking for red salamanders in the coming weeks. Tried to look on Thanksgiving in Lycoming but found 2" of snow instead.

AdminI was hoping for a bit more time myself also. Winter came a little fast, and I did not get out as much as I wanted to either.

ModeratorDec. 11th I spent a little time visiting a local spring house to check upon a population of Northern Red Salamanders.

Kids frequent this place and damage has occurred...

Despite this, the population remains. I found all of these within 1 square meter.

I saw larvae of different sizes.

And several adults of different ages.

MemberLooks like you found the "spot" within the spot. Cool!
We havent been out for a while. When the Fall sets in our priorities change to other outdoor activities. Kelsey got a new camera for Christmas so she is itching to get out to try it on some sally close-ups. Tough weather to see any herps, but im sure if we found a nice spring we could flip something. Im starting to get the itch for the Spotted migrations then the TR's, but thats a long way off. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all!!
