PAHERP helps identify Bog Turtle Population:
You never know what might be in your backyard. A concerned citizen of Chester County thought there may be an endangered animal living in her neighborhood, and she was right. Mona contact us to see if we could help identify a few turtles that lived in a marsh in her back yard. After mentioning there may have been a bog turtle sighted by her father a few years back.

Earlier this week we were excited to have confirmed that there was a Bog Turtle population. The location has been recorded in our database and a report will be sent to the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Project with the hope that the land will be preserved and future Industrial Plans will be halted.

We are excited that PAHERP had a hand in identifying this area, and hope that many citizens become more curious about the animals in there backyard. You never know you may have an endangered species right out side your door.

The Bog turtle is one of Pennsylvania’s endangered species. It is a small black turtle that can be easily identified by the bright orange pattern on its neck. The Bog Turtle prefers a specific habitat and many populations are now in need of help due to the loss of that habitat and the commercial pet trade.
